How sweet are you?

If you are looking for an alternative natural sweetener for your baking or tea then read this excellent article by plant expert and writer Jane Wrigglesworth on stevia.  She offers tips on growing this plant and really practical advice on how to use it.  A big thanks to Jane for allowing us to share this with you.  Visit  her website for more great lifestyle ideas and recipes. http://www.sweetlivingmagazine.co.nz

Summer Tips - Reach for your Tea

Insect Bites – Apply brewed green tea leaves – brew your tea, strain the leaves and then squeeze these tightly to remove as much water as possible. Press the leaves onto the affected area of the skin.

Eyes feeling dry and dusty - Place your used tea bags (fill your own of course) in the fridge and when you need to refresh your eyes rest these on closed lids.  Applying these cooled teabags to sunburn may also give you relief.

Freshen your fridge or chilly bins - Fill a cloth bag with dry tea leaves and place inside to absorb any smells.

Freeze freshly brewed green tea as ice cubes and use them as a face toner - just be careful not to apply ice cubes to your skin right out of the freezer, thaw a little to avoid freezer burn (ouch).

If the weather forecast indicates a hot afternoon then brew a batch of iced tea in the morning at the same time that you are making your breakfast tea. Read more Iced Tea hints here:

Turn surplus brewed tea into ice-cubes to flavour your next batch of iced tea.

Berry Layer Recipe

This is one of my favourite desserts for summer. It is simple, delicious, healthy and looks spectacular when served sliced.

and other Stir Tea Matters

(a) If you love tea books then you might be interested in one of our recent library additions called: Steeped – Recipes Infused with Tea. The author, Annelies Zijderveld has kindly allowed us to reproduce her recipe for cauliflower steaks with an umami sauce using the smoky black tea lapsang souchong. We adore this recipe and the sauce is great on lots of different vegetables.   Enquire at your local bookstore or find this book online.  View recipe

(b) A sense of home – there are certain everyday things that give us a sense of home and place.  It might be brewing a pot of tea or having NZ currency in your wallet.  As you know the NZ bank  notes are going through a transition phase - take a moment to have a quick and interesting tour around the new brighter notes at this website, there are lots of new features I wasn't aware of:www.brightermoney.co.nz

(c) If you are visiting Queenstown in the near future then enjoy a cup of Stir Tea and beautiful food at Bespoke Café  which was recently voted Café  of the Year or pop along and find us on our tea stand at Remarkables Market each Saturday.  Have some fun planning your trip to Central Otago by following theQueenstown Life blog or take a peek behind the scenes of Stir on ourfacebook page in this 15 second video.

Until next time, wishing you Good Health and Happy Tea Times.  Thank you for being part of the Stir community. Michelle Casson, Stir Tea, Queenstown
